MakeMake Tells The Story Of Jennifer Lopez’s Remarkable Career In Netflix’s Halftime
Jennifer Lopez’s life at 50 was busy, to say the least: not only was the world-famous entertainer celebrating a milestone birthday, she was also receiving critical acclaim for her role in Hustlers, preparing for her performance at the Super Bowl LVI halftime show, and working on her latest movie Marry Me, all while raising twins and enduring endless scrutiny around her highly publicized relationship. Halftime, the upcoming documentary from MakeMake, showcases this pivotal time in not only her decades-long career, but her life as a whole.
“We wanted to tell her story, interwoven into this spectacularly unique moment in her life,” says producer Kent Kubena. “We follow her just as she’s reached a point where any other triple-threat performer would have already been cast aside, and instead she’s kicking everything into a higher gear.”
Jennifer’s team, alongside 25/7 Productions, approached MakeMake in November 2019 to drive structure, creative direction, and editorial pacing for the film. Powerful female creative leadership was top of mind for the team — Oscar-nominated director Amanda Micheli was brought on board to helm the project, and Carol Martori joined as lead editor. 25/7’s Dave Broome coordinated with producers Benny Medina and Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas to make sure Jennifer’s voice came through loud and clear. With a menagerie of original and archival footage, documenting everything from her Vegas residency show to personal moments in hotel rooms, MakeMake wove together a more complete picture of the dynamic entertainer.
“What you see in the film more than anything, is that Jennifer truly is a workhorse, and she doesn’t ever really stop — she just keeps on going and doing,” says producer Terry Leonard. “She’s driven by her need to continue and tell stories and entertain.” Extraordinary yes, but exactly what we’ve come to expect from J.Lo.
Halftime has the coveted position of opening the Tribeca Film Festival on June 8th, and will be available to stream on Netflix on June 14th.
